Sweating is a normal function of the body that is needed to keep the body at a steady temperature.
When we exercise, or feel hot, stressed or anxious it is normal to sweat more.
Some people sweat much more than is needed - this is a condition called hyperhidrosis.
The exact causes are unknown but it is known to be related to the nerves that normally make is sweat are more active in patients with hyperhidrosis.
Areas commonly affected include the hands, feet and the underarms.
Unfortunately there is no permanent cure for hyperhidrosis. Stronger antiperspirants can be used which can sometimes be effective.
An alternative option is the use of Botox. This works to block the nerves that are overactive which causes the hyperhidrosis. Small, specific amounts of Botox can be injected into the underarms to block these nerves, and as a result stop the excessive sweating. This result can last for upto 6 months on average.
